ChatGPT as a Commonplace Book

ChatGPT is a 21st century commonplace book.

I have a thread in ChatGPT I call “I, Rob.” This is my AI version of the commonplace book, a personal journal of sorts where one records thoughts, quotes, reflections and more. It’s a muse as well. For me, using AI as a commonplace book is like having a digital assistant that not only stores my ideas but also helps me expand and explore them in new ways.

AI as a commonplace book is for me a digital space where I can jot down snippets of inspiration, write down my favorite quotes, and even scribe my own musings — all in one location. That’s the essence of a commonplace book, a place where creativity and curiosity collide, and where ideas are free to roam and evolve.

With AI, this commonplace book becomes something truly special. It can do something the commonplace book of even two years ago cannot: it can talk back. AI adds a dynamic dimension to the commonplace book experience. It’s not just about storing information — it’s about sparking new connections, generating fresh insights, and pushing the boundaries of my thinking. With AI, the commonplace book becomes a living, breathing ecosystem of ideas and inspiration.
